Japanese Breakfast at The Salt Shed on July 10

Indie pop band Japanese Breakfast headed by Michelle Zauner is heading out on their most recent tour this summer. This is their fourth headlining tour, and they will be stopping off in Chicago on July 10 at The Salt Shed.

Michelle Zauner was born in Soul, South Korea and was raised in Oregon, where she took music lessons from a young age. After college, she broke into the Philadelphia emo scene with a band called Little Big League. Shortly after this, she began releasing music under the moniker Japanese Breakfast after seeing a GIF of the meal. In 2015, Zauner released the band’s first album, Psychopomp, which dealt with the death of her mother while keeping the group’s upbeat tone. The album was met with critical success and scored Zauner an opening slot with fellow indie pop musician, Mitski.

Since then, Japanese Breakfast has released two more studio albums, the most recent of which was titled Jubilee. Of the album, Zauner is quoted saying that she wanted her third album to “be about joy” after writing about her trauma for so many years. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award and received many more awards and praise.

Japanese Breakfast’s music combines aspects of indie-pop, dream pop, and lo-fi genres. In Zauner’s live shows, she lets the music speak for itself. The songs flow into one another seamlessly, despite the different genres and vibes the band has experimented with in the past. You can see Japanese Breakfast in Chicago at The Salt Shed on July 10.
