Album Review: Body of Light – Bitter Reflection

Nostalgic and Bright ’80’s-Inspired Synth-Pop

Brothers Alex and Andrew Jarson, also known as Body of Light, released their latest album, Bitter Reflection, on June 30. This nostalgic album provides listeners with a modern take on ’80’s-inspired synth-pop. Filled with classic and evocative synth sounds, this album is certain to keep listeners engaged from start to finish.

The first track, “Get It Right,” immediately engulfs listeners in the iconic ’80s-style sound. Consisting of airy synths, tubular bells and punchy snare hits played on the upbeats, this track perfectly sets the mood for the rest of the album.

“Strike The Match” begins with arpeggiated synth lines and poppy bursts of sound. This track has a retro video game vibe, with a bouncy, groovy sound. The punchy drums and slightly ominous synth lines make this track stand out, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that this tune is melodic and catchy.

The funky sequencer heard throughout “This Conversation” establishes the mechanical yet groovy feel of this track. Reminiscent of an A-ha tune, this track sounds like it’d be on the ’80s synth-pop charts. The syncopated rhythms serve as the driving force of this track, resembling a conversation between the different instruments. The call-and-response vocal harmonies also add some extra color to the piece that is much appreciated.

The airy, ethereal vibe of “Fortia” takes a completely different and unexpected stylistic turn than what was previously established. Though this track is filled with beautiful harmonies and soft samples of people talking and laughing that invoke a warm feeling, it proves to be a pleasant surprise. The next track, “Bitter Reflection,” picks up where “Fortia” left off. This moving ballad contains some pleasant reverberant electric guitars and vocal harmonies.

One of the most memorable tracks on Bitter Reflection is “Out Of Season.” Characterized by striking, bass-heavy drums and animated, driving synth rhythms, this track embodies the classic, nostalgic sound Body of Light was going for. The various instruments heard throughout this tune and extremely catchy chorus reminisce Madonna’s hit song “Into The Groove.”

Bitter Reflection without a doubt takes listeners on a nostalgic and fun journey into the past. The bright, colorful sounds and numerous instrumentals heard throughout encapsulate the vibe of this ’80s-inspired album perfectly.
