Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade at The Salt Shed on July 2

Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade is hitting the road for the first time since 2007. Their “Summer of Green” Tour will hit Chicago on July 2 at The Salt Shed.

The group was formed by all-time great bass player Les Claypool in 2000 while on a hiatus from his main band, Primus. Originally a jam band that played covers, the lineup consisted of Marc Haggard on guitar, Skerik on saxophone, Claypool on bass and vocals, and both Jack Irons and Tim Alexander on drums. A popular part of the band’s early performances were their full renditions of Pink Floyd’s album Animals. The Flying Frog Brigade has released two live-set recordings, as well as an original album in 2002 entitled Purple Onion. A strange, experimental rock album, Purple Onion pleased critics and fans alike, noting the group’s original sound and creativity.

The Frog Brigade ultimately disbanded when Primus reformed in 2003. But now, after two decades since the band has performed, Claypool has reunited the troops with some new faces, including Sean Lennon on the guitar and Paulo Baldi on the drums. These new members are all frequent collaborators of Claypool’s, and he has expressed immense excitement about the new group.

The upcoming setlist will include a full rendition of Animals again, as well as covers from Claypool’s former and current projects, like Primus and The Claypool Lennon Delirium. As Claypool puts it, “there are a lot of popsicle sticks on the table to build some things with.”
