The “queen of neo-soul” Erykah Badu is heading to Chicago. She will be stopping at the United Center on July 1 as part of her “Unfollow Me” Tour, which has been traveling around the US this summer.
Erykah Badu began performing at only four years old, acting in theater productions in her hometown of Dallas, Texas. She found a passion for music and freestyling by the time she was fourteen, and eventually left college to pursue music full time. Her demo, Country Cousins, secured her a record deal with Universal Records. Badu’s debut record, Baduiszm, was released in 1997 to overwhelming praise. Since then, the singer has put out five studio albums with Universal, sustaining her fanbase and place in soul culture.
Badu has been coined the “queen of neo-soul” due to her integral part in ushering in the genre’s popularity in the 90s. The artist seamlessly blends influences from R&B, soul, hip-hop, funk, and jazz. Badu’s music is also influenced by a plethora of subject matters, including African folk traditions, personal relationships, and social justice concerns.
The “Unfollow Me” tour began on June 11 in Badu’s home state of Texas. The singer has played to electric audiences these past few weeks, bouncing off their energy and engaging with her fans. At her recent LA show, Badu proclaimed to the crowd “I show up cause y’all show up. We become one living, breathing organism.”
