Album Review: Comet Gain – The Misfit Jukebox

A Diverse and Captivating Album

Comet Gain, the European indie pop-rock band, recently released an extensive album entitled The Misfit Jukebox. Although the album covers many topics, they maintain an upbeat and energetic vibe throughout. They sing about topics ranging from heartbreak and love to philosophical thoughts and people they know. This album will turn heads with its groovy pop-rock vibes and exquisite sound that blends genres, like indie, rock, retro pop and alternative.

The second track, “Pinstriped Rebel,” is a groovy rock track that tells a story about a man that they call the pinstriped rebel, an intriguing, entrancing and independent man. The instrumentation is a laid-back rock sound with groovy electric guitars, energetic percussion and upbeat vibes. This track will surely pull in listeners with its narrative ability and groovy vibes.

The fourth track, “When?!” is another upbeat and energetic song. It leans into retro rock with hollow distorted guitars and synthesizers. It is another captivating track that hones in on the band’s unique sound in a different light than the previous tracks. A driving bass keeps the energy high as they sing about tragic themes such as broken hearts, dying and falling apart.

The fifth track, “Herbert Huncke Part 3,” is one of the album’s most rock-and-roll tracks. Distorted guitar riffs, bold lyrics and hollow drums set the tone. This song sounds the most angry as they sing aggressively, demanding what they want. This track is another upbeat, fun one to dance and sing along to.

Further into the album, “Even This Could Be Beautiful” takes the album down a more relaxed path. The vocals are distant over an acoustic guitar being strummed and some bass. It is a beautiful arrangement that sounds distant and raw. The lyrics are harder to hear, but the song has a laid-back vibe that puts the listener at ease.

Towards the album’s end, “Your Just Lonely” stands out for its well-written lyrics and instrumental accompaniment. It begins with breathtaking guitar licks that are mellow yet manage to capture the listener’s interest. As the song progresses, a walk of sound builds with the guitars layered over electric piano, bass and drums. The lyrics tell a story about a young girl who is lonely but seemingly perfect. It is a truly captivating track that meshes the different vibes and sounds Comet Gain creates over the course of the album, showing off their artistic abilities.

Stephanie Pratt: I am a student at Hamilton College majoring in economics and minoring in Spanish and music. Music and writing are two of my passions. I listen to every genre, but my favorite is indie-pop. I have studied and learned to play many different genres of guitar, from classical and rock to pop and indie. I also play piano and have begun to write music. In my free time, I enjoy exploring new and upcoming artists, photography, and writing music. I have attended Berklee College of Music, where I learned more about the music industry, guitar theory, music production, and songwriting. I also love to attend live music events and am often at The House of Blues in Boston checking out my favorite bands.
