Album Review: Godflesh – Purge

Truly mind-bending anthems

English industrial metal band Godflesh have been raising hell since 1982 and earlier this month the group released their ninth studio album Purge. Each track is filled with ear-bleeding instrumentation and vein-shaking vocals. Purge is a great example of how passionate Godflesh in terms of their dedication to music.

“Nero” kicks the album off in a rhythmic way. While the music blares from the speakers, the guitar and drum evoke elements of hard rock, providing electrifying riffs and thunderous drum beats while the vocal performances continues to shout out the lyrics. “Nero” welcomes listeners to band’s world with epic instrumentation and intense accompanying vocals.

“Land Lord” is a heart-stopping composition featuring killer guitar playing from JK Broadrick and thrilling bass playing from B.C. Green. While listening, Broadrick shocks the atmosphere with mind-blowing notes while Green’s bass skills shake the background with great authority. “Land Lord” is a righteous jam with sizzling riffs from Broadrick and Green.

“Lazarus Leper” is perhaps one of the best songs on Purge because of the solid drumming and dynamic vocal performance from Broadrick. The song is an exceptional example of what industrial metal should sound like. Throughout the entire track, the drumming is on a lower tempo while Broadrick uses his low, sharp voice to speak out the lyrics. “Lazarus Leper” is a well-composed tune that shows that industrial metal can still flourish in today’s musical landscape.

“Mythology Of Self” is a true head banger; the deep instrumentation dazzles listener’s ears with hard hitting noise while Broadrick’s deep and powerful voice growls out the lyrics. On “Mythology Of Self,” Godflesh shows how creative they can be with their music, especially with crafting the hardcore instrumentation and delivering a powerful vocal performance which brings the darker side of the band to life, reinvigorating the metal genre as a whole.

Godflesh are known for their loud and innovative music and with Purge, the band proves that their love for creating and performing dynamic music is undying, and it truly shows.
