The Chicago originated, pop punk staple Fall Out Boy is embarking on their latest international tour following the release of their newest album So Much (For) Stardust. The “So Much For (Tour) Dust” tour will arrive in Chicago this week on June 21 at Wrigley Field.
Fall Out Boy has been a constant in the emo and pop rock scene for over 20 years. Their roots can be traced back to Chicago suburb Wilmette in 2001, when bassist Pete Wentz and guitarist Joe Trohman became wary of the changing punk scene in the city. The pair brought on lead singer Patrick Stump after they met him by chance at a now-defunct Borders bookstore. Shortly after, the band began performing at universities around Illinois and set off to Wisconsin with drummer Andy Hurley to record their first collection of songs.
The band’s debut album, Take This to Your Grave, was released in 2003. Even before the album was released, Fall Out Boy’s dedicated fanbase had already begun forming. Only months later, the band was getting banned from venues because the shows would end in “near riots.” Their subsequent albums From Under the Cork Tree, Infinity on High, and Folie A Deux lead Fall Out Boy to mainstream success, with singles that are now classics like “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” and “Dance Dance.” Soon, the group was playing to sold out crowds of fans on multiple tours. However, by 2009, Stump described the band as “running on fumes – creatively and as people,” causing the group to take a hiatus.
In 2013, the band reformed as Wentz needed a creative outlet after struggling with his mental health during the hiatus. What followed was a reimagining of the band, resulting in the album Save Rock and Roll, which many critics hailed as a renaissance of the pop-punk genre. In years following, Fall Out Boy has released three more albums, most recently So Much (for) Stardust earlier this year.
Fall Out Boy is now known as a major influence in not just their genre, but the music industry as a whole. With their infamously lengthy song titles, hardcore Chicago roots, and ironic and personal lyrics, the band has influenced and inspired many huge players in music, like Panic! at the Disco and Taylor Swift. Hundreds of thousands of teenagers and adults alike now safely say that Fall Out Boy defined their childhood and shaped their music taste, as their music will surely do for many years to come.
