Glam metal with serious staying power
Heaven’s Edge is back and better than ever with their new album Get It Right, a showstopping composition determined to remind fans that the best is yet to come. The album’s opening track, “Had Enough,” immediately announces its arrival with a thumping bassline, a reminder that Heaven’s Edge never left the glam rock scene. Yes, Heaven’s Edge holds fast to the tried and true sounds that captivated the ‘80s and ‘90s, but they’re just as infectious today as ever, if not more so. Get It Right is a prime example of a band with staying power and, even better, an impressive comeback despite a hiatus in between albums.
The expectation with “Had Enough” is that it will be the first in a list of tracks, each with nods to the ‘80s and ‘90s, with the occasional ballad thrown into the mix. However, Get It Right is a rollercoaster ride that guarantees to impress, with each track a welcome adventure into a culmination of both retro and modern sounds. As such, “Had Enough” is an immediate shred fest with insane guitar solos and unstoppable drums, bass and vocals, the perfect music to rip you from your midday slump. “Had Enough” is only the beginning. The rockers immediately tear into “Gone Gone Gone,” the vocals perfectly in sync with the relentless and intense instrumentals. The pristine guitar riffs manage to command attention without overpowering their musical counterparts, every solo a flawless and awe-inspiring experience.
Suffice it to say, the entire album has guitar solos that even Slash would approve of, the talent raw and evocative. But the entire musical score is, for lack of a better word, perfection. “Nothing Left But Goodbye” offers a punchy tune that refuses to quit, the track’s sound reminiscent of reimagined ‘80s glam metal. This isn’t to say the entire album is a throwback to the days of yesteryear (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Quite the opposite, actually.
“What Could’ve Been” promises listeners a softer ballad with a modern flair. But, as the old adage goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Heaven’s Edge lives by this and then some. Despite its retro undertones, “What Couldn’t Been” is as timeless as the band itself, the sound a culmination of all things Heaven’s Edge. It’s easy to say that Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and Guns N’ Roses fans would be drawn to Heaven’s Edge, but to lump them into the same category as other bands does them a disservice.
Heaven’s Edge’s most recent album might fall within the realm of ‘80s glam metal, but there’s an imperceivable difference that sets them apart from other bands within the genre. Because, at the end of the day, Get It Right tackles a wide range of sounds, refusing to conform to one standardized box. This is a testament to a band that knows its worth — and its talent — producing infectious music time and time again. So to anyone in search of steadfast good music that won’t ebb and flow with the fads, give Get It Right an immediate listen. You just might fall into the welcome trap of an amazing group of rockers that stay true to their roots without ever sacrificing quality.
