Album Review: Spirit Adrift – 20 Centuries Gone

Immense passion for the music

Spirit Adrift was originally formed in 2015 as Nate Garrett’s heavy metal solo project but a little later Spirit Adrift became a full touring band in Austin, Texas. Throughout the years, Spirit Adrift have shocked listeners’ ears with their talent and in August the band released 20 Centuries Gone.

Each track is filled with incredible face-smacking instrumentation and vocals but the best part of the EP by far is hearing Spirit Adrift cover tracks from Type O Negative, Pantera, Metallica, Thin Lizzy, ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Each performance shows how serious Spirit Adrift are about their musical creativity.

Opening track “Sorcerer’s Fate” is a true head banger, each guitar note sizzles the air with amazing sound. The bass can be heard eagerly shaking the background while the lead guitar performs an energetic solo. “Sorcerer’s Fate” has earned its position as a classic metal piece thanks to the killer guitar playing.

On 20 Centuries Gone, the band performs a cover of Metallica’s “Escape.” As a whole, they do an excellent job creating their own version of this number, unafraid of applying their own musical style to transform the track. On the original version, the instrumentation is a bit louder and stronger whereas on Spirit Adrift cover, the instrumentation is electrified with harmony and the vocal tone is lower. Spirit Adrift’s cover of “Escape” shows Metallica’s musical influence on the band.

Another great cover is ZZ Top’s “Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings.” Spirit Adrift creates an enjoyable mix of rock and metal. The original version of this composition is straight-up rock with the lead and bass guitars play rhythmically, each drum beat staying at a simple tempo and the vocal performance remains smooth throughout. As for Spirit Adrift’s version, the original elements can be heard in the powerful instrumentation and listeners can hear the bass rumbling in the background. As for the vocal performance, the style is the same as the original, remaining just as smooth. Spirit Adrift’s love for ZZ Top can be heard on their cover of “Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings.”

It is clear that Spirit Adrift have not lost their touch on 20 Centuries Gone with each and every guitar, drum and vocal performance, the band displays how important music is to them, whether it be in the form of their own creation or an electrifying cover.
