Album Review: Mandi Mapes – Levees

A Relaxed and Well-Written Album

Mandi Mapes, Nashville-based singer-songwriter, recently released her first full album, called Levees. After many singles and EPs, she steps onto the scene with this seven-song project. It is a gentle and acoustic collection of songs that lets her songwriting to take center stage and shine. These seven songs tell her secrets and thoughts about love, loss and growth.

The opening track, “Surely Goodness,” is laidback and reflective. She sings about the current events in the world and the sadness that comes with them. Despite all of the heartbreaking occurrences around the world, she believes that goodness follows her unapologetically. This song is a gentle yet uplifting stream of positivity that is sure to connect with many listeners with its bright melodies and gentle reassurances.

The title track, “Levees,” is a gentle and light song that tells a story. She softly sings over a simple piano through the first verse and tells the story of loss and the precaution that comes with the risk of losing anyone or anything. It is a sweet love song that resolves in the chorus to show that some people are willing to risk it all to love someone else. This is a heartwarming song that is honest and direct.

The third track, “Even On The Worst Days,” tells an uplifting and honest story. She sings of going through hard times in a relationship but promising never to walk away and take on the pain to stay. It is a sweet and easy to listen to track. Behind her vocals are a rhythmic piano and drums. Her heartfelt lyrics and uplifting melodies shine on this track.

The next track, “Daffodil Floors,” takes on a more melancholic tone. She sings about almost losing herself in the verse, but in the chorus, she sings about reconnecting with herself and finding her truth and happiness. Despite the more melancholic piano backing, she still has an uplifting message that encourages listeners to follow their callings rather than listen to the opinions of others. Over the piano, she sings gently and full of emotion with swaying melodies and comforting harmonies.

On the closing track, “Dream,” she is joined by Paul Zach. On this one, she sings about following her passions and remembering how to chase her dreams when she was a child. These lyrics are accompanied by gentle drums, calming piano and acoustic guitar. In the second verse, Zach joins her on the vocals, and they tell the story harmonically.

Overall, Levees, is an honest and inspiring collection of laid-back songs that is sure to connect with many listeners.

Stephanie Pratt: I am a student at Hamilton College majoring in economics and minoring in Spanish and music. Music and writing are two of my passions. I listen to every genre, but my favorite is indie-pop. I have studied and learned to play many different genres of guitar, from classical and rock to pop and indie. I also play piano and have begun to write music. In my free time, I enjoy exploring new and upcoming artists, photography, and writing music. I have attended Berklee College of Music, where I learned more about the music industry, guitar theory, music production, and songwriting. I also love to attend live music events and am often at The House of Blues in Boston checking out my favorite bands.
