Album Review: Kanaan – Downpour

An instrumental modern rock album that tells a story

On their 2023 album, Kanaan produces an all-instrumental rock album, a style of music not often seen anymore. Though the album doesn’t feature any vocals, the band makes an effort to make each track sound different in their own way.

The album kicks off with the track “Black Time Fuzz,” which acts as a great intro for the rest of the album. The song has a modern rock feel and features heavy bass and guitar throughout with the drums picking up toward the end. This opening track touches on every aspect of the album that the listener will get to hear throughout.

As the album moves into the second track, the listener is hit with a drum lead, distinguishing itself from the opener. As the song continues, the track picks up and even introduces a guitar slide which adds a nice touch and almost gives it an 80s rock feel.

“Downpour” almost has a jazz feel to it. The beginning features jazz-like drums but the track quickly picks up to an astounding guitar solo which ties it back to its original vibe before getting into the next one minute track “Psunspot” which acts as a buffer between the hard guitar and drum solos featured throughout the album.

The album concludes with an almost out-of-this-world feel. The tracks “Solaris Pt.1” and “Solaris Pt.2” feed off of each other and tell one long story through two songs. Part 1 of this duo starts off with an outer space and mystical feel before getting into that classic heavy guitar and drum which has been a recurring theme throughout the album. Part 2 starts right out with those instruments but keeps the outer space feel throughout the track.

Throughout this record, Kanaan successfully ties all seven tracks back to an original theme while also allowing the songs to have personalities of their own, creating a very well rounded album.
