In the midst of the ongoing WGA (Writers Guild of America) strike, it seems the unfair payment for the work of creatives spans far beyond just the box office. Recently, Snoop Dogg gave his thoughts during the Milken Institute Global Conference about the current payment models streaming services provide musicians. The rapper candidly gave his thoughts calling it, “fucked up” and paralleled the fight against major studios to the stand musicians should start taking against streaming services.

“[Artists] need to figure it out the same way the writers are figuring it out”, Snoop urges artists to find their voice in an ever-changing industry that will leave them out dry before they know it. He continued, “Somebody explain to me how you can get a billion streams and not get a million dollars? That’s the main gripe with a lot of us artists is that we do major numbers, but it don’t add up to the money. Like, where the fuck is the money?”

With the current state of the writer’s strike, many shows have begun to halt the productions of their upcoming seasons. From Netflix’s Stranger Things to beloved ABC sitcom, Abbott Elementary, this strike is changing the state of Hollywood in front of the eyes of the consumer and the creator.

Although the writers strike is currently making waves in the TV and film industry, with more talks of payment injustice in the entirety of the entertainment industry this fire is sure to spread. If artists begin to take the advice of Snoop Dogg, maybe the change and fair treatment of creatives across the industry can be found.
