Album Review: Dorthia Cottrell – Death Folk Country

Elegant, bold and powerful

Dorthia Cottrell is known for her work with the band Windhand, but now the artist is creating her own madness with the album Death Folk Country; each track if filled with Cottrell’s elegant vocals filling the air with bittersweet sound as the instrumentation evokes the feeling of unwanted insecurity  Cottrell does not shy away from her talents on Death Folk Country.

Melodic “Black Canyon” is a tune which is filled with strong emotions thanks to the guitar playing. Each surging riff brings the bold feeling of hopelessness and despair which overall compliments the dark theme.

Sentimental “Effigy at the Gates of Ur” is a lovely ditty featuring beautiful piano playing shaking the background with gorgeous noise. The best part of the listening experience is hearing each piano key capture the emotion of sadness while Cottrell sings out the lyrics. The piano playing on “Effigy at the Gates of Ur” contributes to the strong emotions the singer is feeling.

Dooming “Hell In My Water” is a stunning number. The guitar playing captures the feeling of danger being near and each riff contributes to the lingering intensity. Cottrell ‘s vocal performance is top notch, wailing out the lyrics with strong emotional delivery. “Hell In My Water” features the best guitar playing and vocal performance of the entire record.

“Eat What I Kill” has relatable lyrics that can speak for those who are voiceless. The words “Stop your crying and castin’ on runes / Once a bad girl, a bad girl for good / I think we both know, we’ve done more for worse / So why are you saying my name like a curse?” touches on how some are trying to kill the darkness that constantly surrounds their lives while people continue to judge them for how they are dealing with their lives. “Eat What I Kill” is a well written track which speaks truth for those who are unable to share their feelings.

Death Folk Country is an album which brings an enjoyable heavy mix of melody, harmony and blues. Cottrell is a talented artist and listeners and critics alike are in for a treat with her latest installment.
