Emotional, Unsettling and Hypnotic
Brian Eno’s album, FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE, is a sorrowful soundtrack about apocalyptic times and the end of the human race. The music itself is slightly confusing, with the way it sounds deceivingly ambient yet has unsettling tones. Many of the songs sound like they contain power tool sounds, which add to the unnerving vibe of the album. This album sounds like it would be fit for a sci-fi horror film, and gives the lyrics more meaning and power.
The smooth vocals on the album give the music its mournful quality. The artist’s voice manages to convey the emotional pain of watching the end of the world. The echoing voices create a mystical sound that, overtime, becomes hypnotic. Though both the vocals and the music sound like they would be relaxing, they are far from it. The album carries a constant suspense and eerie edge that makes it nearly impossible to relax while listening. This causes the lyrics and the message to take on a sharper focus.
Unfortunately, overtime the music begins to sound repetitive and blurs together. With its absence of rhythm and drive it feels stark and cold. There is not much life in the music itself, which causes it to sound a bit bland. There is no build-up or excitement in the album, and no climax in any of the songs. Each track possesses the same slow tempo that takes most of the life out of the music.
Though this album lacks excitement, it maintains a strong focus on its main message throughout each song. The music is not exactly enjoyable or comfortable to listen to, but the lyrics explain why the music is harsh, because it’s about the end of human life. Since the reality of the message is disturbing, the music must also be unnerving to get the idea across to its audience. Overall, the music is extremely thoughtful and meaningful, and it’s clear the artist cares deeply about the events taking place around the world. Fans of emotional electronic music are sure to love FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE.
