Indie rock artist Mac DeMarco has released a staggering collection of previously unreleased music, with 199 tracks in total. The collection is titled One Wayne G: a collection mostly comprised of demos and sketches of his material from 2018 to early 2023.
According to Pitchfork, the collection is a reference to the hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. The title is a clear reference– One Wayne G– but the number of tracks– 199– is a reference to Gretzky who famously wore the number 99. Mac’s Record Label shared two photos of Gretzky to their Instagram stories, who led the Edmonton Oilers to four Stanley Cups in the 1980s. DeMarco, too, is from Edmonton, having been raised there in the 1990s.
One Wayne G comes only a few months after the release of DeMarco’s previous album, Five Easy Hot Dogs, in January 2023. DeMarco recorded the instrumentals for the album during a road trip. Read more about DeMarco’s Five Easy Hot Dogs at our album review here.
