Album Review: Enslaved – Heimdal

Thunderous, spine-tingling metal

Extreme metal band Enslaved originally formed in 1991 in Haugesund, Norway. Dozens of successful studio albums later, the band returns with their latest record Heimdal which features face-smacking guitar riffs, thunderous drum beats and killer vocal performances throughout. Enslaved stay true to their musical roots on Heimdal while simultaneously unafraid to serve as pioneers of their genre.

“Congelia” is a true, righteous head banger thanks to Iver Sandøy’s skills as a drummer. Right off the bat, fast paced and rhythmic drum beats welcome listeners to the band’s carefully crafted sound. The drum tempo grows higher and higher with each beat, creating an energizing listening experience that is almost addicting.

“Kingdom” is an electrifying track with mind dazzling guitar playing from Ivar Bjørnson and Arve Isdal. What is particularly enjoyable about this composition is that both guitarists shake the background with delightfully heavy riffs that can send chills down enthusiastic listeners’ spines.

“The Eternal Sea” provides Grutle Kjellson the opportunity to showcase his skills, both as a vocalist and as the band’s bassist. Kjellson creates spine-tingling notes that can stimulate the minds of those who are listening and his vocals keep things together, remaining strong, powerful and authoritative through each transition on “The Eternal Sea.”

Title track “Heimdal” closes the album on a solid, chaotic note. The guitars spice things up by generating hardcore sound while the drum playing keeps the track cohesive with heart stopping beats. Enslaved give their all on “Heimdal” and it truly shows; each band member contributes to the endless intensity with their musical skills and undeniable talent.

Enslaved are back with a vengeance with the release of Heimdal. Fans and critics alike will be blown away with how much the band has grown musically as highlighted on each individual track on this record.
