Singer-Songwriter, Jonny Polonsky, has recently released his new single entitled, “Wrong Dove”, in promotion for his upcoming 12th studio album, Rise of the Rebel Angel. Set to release May 12 2023. Rise of the Rebel Angel is expected to be a thoughtful and emotionally driven project with his new acoustic ballad “Wrong Dove”.
Opening up with guitar strums reminiscent of old psychedelic rock, Polonsky is able to entrance listeners into the production and song’s meaning. “We seek love / And in turn, we seek blessing from the beast” Polonsky coos over the instrumentation in a haunting falsetto telling the story of chasing distraction.
In an interview with Journalist, Tina Benitez-Eves, Polonsky speaks on the song’s conception and states, “I wrote ‘Wrong Dove’ just messing around on my acoustic 12 string guitar one afternoon. It’s a strange little song, with kind of a baroque, medieval feel to it. In retrospect,
I realize I stole the opening bit from an Alex G song. Lyrically, the song is about how off track one can get in life. It has a mournful, yearning quality to it, but I think there’s a lot of hope and a redemptive feeling in there, too”.
This on-the-fly and experiment driven creation process was vital for Polonsky in creating the rest of his forthcoming album. In an interview with American Songwriter, Polonsky states the sound of the album is, “Just the right amount of sloppy because sometimes, that makes things sound more interesting”. The DIY production sets this album up to be a raw release of energy and emotion that fans usually expect from Polonsky’s music
Rise of the Rebel Angel will be released under Loosegroove Records, a record company launched by Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard and Malfunkshun’s Regan Hagar. The album is now available for vinyl pre-order on limited edition blue vinyl.
