Album Review: Kerala Dust – Violet Drive

Dark, Eerie and Unnerving

Kerala Dust’s newly released album, Violet Drive, is a dark, electronic soundtrack that is slightly nerve-racking to listen to. The overall mood of the album is laid-back, and there is very little drive in each song. Vocals seem to be more of an undertone on the album. The audience has to listen intently in order to understand what is being said in each song. The star of the show in this album is the percussion. The steady pulsing rhythm is what gives this album its energy, and also makes it memorable.

There is a strong sense of loneliness with the use of the single vocals. The vocalist seems to speak the lyrics more than sing them, but there is a slightly audible melody. The melody that is heard is a strangely dissonant tune that adds an eerie edge to the piece. The whispering voice even sounds like growling at certain points throughout the album.

The whole album seems to paint a picture of something like an abandoned building, with the overall dark tone of each song and the unpredictability of the tracks themselves. In the background of each song, there are many percussive and short melodic breaks that contribute to the soundtrack’s unnerving theme. The highlight of the album is the song “Red Light,” which contains the most haunting drumbeats of the entire soundtrack. Not only is the percussion in this song intriguing, but it also compliments all the other elements of the song, making it stand out.

Violet Drive is a particularly unsettling album, with interesting gothic vibes. Each song on this soundtrack is sure to leave the audience anxious, with the number of unresolved dissonant melodies it possesses. The constant pulsing drumbeats seem to be the main focus of the album, and manages to give a heartbeat to every song. The amount of detail that went into this album is evident in every musical element, and fans can experience each element of the album every time they listen to it, and never get tired of the music.
