7/5/23 – Chicago, IL – Thalia Hall
The instrumental band GoGo Penguin is coming to Thalia Hall on May 7th! The band consists of Chris Illingworth, Nick Blacka, and Jon Scott. GoG Penguin is set to release their new album Everything Is Going To Be OK which is out on April 14th. They are teasing their new album with various singles. According to their website, GoGo Penguin describes themselves as a “break-beat trio”. Their songs generally are composed of repeating drum beats, pianos, and a base. Their music is ambient and melodramatic. While their songs are calming, GoGo Penguin also incorporates captivating melodies through the piano and groovy drum beats to excite the songs.
Penguin’s recent single “Parasite”, leads with a staccato string roll. It slowly builds into an amalgamation of rolling drums, strings, and pianos. Another single “Friday Film Special” is a perfect title for the ambient track. The groovy bass and muddle piano is reminiscent of a late night Friday drive. The 80s inspired synths give a funky nostalgic energy to the track.
Everything Is Going To Be Okay was built with a lot of emotional energy. Their website describes the album as rooted in turbulence and loss. But with such heavy emotions, the band was left to create in isolation. What was born was empathy, understanding, and a mindfulness that celebrates the highs in life What was born was Everything Is Going To Be Okay.
