27/4/23 – Chicago, IL – Riviera Theatre
The jazz and funk band Hiatus Kaiyote comes to Riviera Theatre on April 27th! Hiatus Kaiyote is composed of Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield, Paul Bender, Simon Mavin, and Perrin Moss. The band is responsible for making songs like “Breathing Underwater” and “Nakamarra” which features Q-Tip. Both songs received GRAMMY nominations as well as their 2021 album Mood Valiant.
The Australian band imbues an ethereal sound into their jazz and funk core. Whether it’s ambient sounds in the background or Saalfield’s haunting vocals, an element of spirituality is tangible. Their music can be described as neo soul or future soul.
According to jamproductions.com, it was in 2018 that the frontwoman, Nai Palm was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went through a mastectomy and came back to the band full swing. This became a defining moment for Mood Valiant.
Another defining moment during the production of their album was their work in Brazil. In their most recent album, Hiatus Kaiyote incorporated the language of the Varinawa tribe from Brazil. The band talks about learning from the tribe about “the vast expansive natural wisdom and traditions of environmental co-existence”. The environment is a clear influence on the band’s ideals -it’s influence is just as present in their music. Hiatus Kaiyote was there to work with Brazilian producer Arthur Verocai.
The vulnerable and ethereal energy in Hiatus Kaiyote’s jazz funk music is sure to teleport the audience of Riviera Theater into another dimension completely.
