14/3/23, 15/3/23 – Chicago, IL – City Winery
The “A Thousand Miles” singer, Vanessa Carlton comes to City Winery for a two day residency. Carlton is here on her Future Pain Tour, a reference to the track in her recent album Love Is An Art. The sixth studio album by Carlton just got a deluxe version release that came out in 2021. According to Vanessacarlton.com, this is her first United States headlining tour in five years.
Love Is An Art is a meditative piece about life, love, and just being human. The album is filled with organs that ring in your ear as you listen to Carlton’s echoing vocals. The ambient influences are perfect for listening to the album on a calm afternoon. Citywinery.com describes it as “a meditation on the eternal seesaw that is human connection”. Carlton’s lyrics are ethereal and contemplative as she laments about the intricacies of life.
The first two tracks “I Can’t Stay the Same” and “Companion Star” discuss what it is like to accept change. The first song is very matter-of-fact in it’s declaration for change. Whereas “Companion Star” describes a relationship between Carlton and someone that brings her back to who she is. As she changes, her “Companion Star” will pull her back to love.
The title track “Love is an Art” is another descriptive track about how the love between people changes. Carlton describes love as “always building up, falling apart.” Like the other songs on the album, the title track references roots, gardens, and flowers.
The ambience and ethereal nature seeps through every element of the album. The live show should expect to amplify all of the emotions of the album. It’s easy to imagine the sonic vulnerability of the album will leave audiences cherishing the love they have.
