Next Month: Mavis Staples at Symphony Center

The Chicago blues and gospel singer, Mavis Staples is coming back home to sing at the Symphony Center on February 4th! Staples recently worked on a project with Levon Helm entitled Carry Me Home. The album covers songs from the likes of Nina Simone and Bob Dylan in Staples’ signature blues style. According to Mavisstaples.com, Carry Me Home is a combination of live features from Woodstock 2011 and various sessions from that summer. It also remains the last recordings of Helm’s before his death. 

 

According to Wiki, Mavis Staples started her singing career in her family band; The Staple Singers. Since then she has gone on to release her own solo albums. Throughout her musical projects she has earned herself multiple Grammy nominations and four wins. 

 

Through her music, Staples became a civil rights activist and voice for many. According to an interview with NPR, her song “Why (Am I Treated So Bad)” was one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s favorites. Dr. King would ask her to play it at civil rights meetings. Mavisstaples.com highlights some of her other accomplishments in the civil rights movement: marching with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to be one of the many moments of her advocacy. 

 

Joining Staples on stage will be Celisse. According to CSO.com, Celisse is blues singer and musician with various connections to the music industry. She supported Kesha on stage of the 60th Annual Grammy Awards as well as played the lead guitar for Lizzo on Saturday Night Live. On Celisse’s Instagram, she can be seen joining the stage with stars like Brandi Carlile and Sheryl Crow. Tickets are still available to see Mavis Staples and Celisse at cso.com
