RIP: The Pointer Sister’s Anita Pointer Dead At 74

Unfortunate news struck before the arrival of a new year as Variety shared the passing of Anita Pointer at the age of 74.

Pointer’s publicist released a statement revealing the artist’s death, letting the world know that Pointer sadly passed after a battle with cancer. Some of Pointer’s surviving family members (her sister, Ruth, her brothers, Aaron & Fritz, and her granddaughter, Roxie) released a statement that stated “While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Anita, we are comforted in knowing she is now with her daughter, Jada, and her sisters June and Boonie, and at peace. She was the one that kept all of us close and together for so long. Her love of our family will live on in each of us. Please respect our privacy during this period of grief and loss. Heaven is a more loving, beautiful place with Anita there.”

Pointer was a part of the dynamic ‘70s pop group The Pointer Sisters with her siblings. She was with the group from its beginning in 1969 until she retired in 2015 due to her health. Pointer was the last surviving Pointer sister after Bonnie Pointer’s death in 2020 and June Pointer in 2006.

The Pointer Sisters debut album in 1973 was a major hit, and their popularity only continued to grow. Their song “How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side)” hit the No. 1 spot on the R&B charts. Their music continued to climb the charts as years went by, with their version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Fire” becoming their first gold single. Their album Break Out was certified 3 times platinum.
