Album Review: Frank Zappa – Waka/Wazoo

Innovative, nostalgic and undeniably relevant

Frank Zappa was an American musician, composer and bandleader known for clever improvisation and unconventional approaches to jazz and rock music throughout the late twentieth century. He was a self taught multi-instrumentalist, however, his most prominent instrument was the guitar. Throughout his music career, he has been influenced by a plethora of musical genres such as classical, blues, rock, jazz, R&B and more. This has made his music sometimes difficult to categorize, but this was a part of what made his music so incredibly distinctive. He spanned an extremely successful music career, releasing over 60 studio albums within a 30 year time span, until his passing in 1993.

Zappa’s latest album, Waka/Wazoo, was released on December 15, 2022 to honor and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mothers Of Invention/Hot Rats/Grand Wazoo experience from 1972. Waka/Wazoo contains a massive compilation of Zappa’s hits from several of his past albums such as Wazoo, Waka/Jawaka and more. Waka/Wazoo, is now being sold as a 4-CD box set that provides great nostalgic hits as well as different alternate takes and outtakes that are completely new to fans.

The opening track of Waka/Wazoo is “Your Mouth (Take 1)” which provides a raw and enjoyable welcome to the album, making listeners feel as though they are in the studio with the musician. Eventually, “Your Mouth (Take 1)” develops into a classic blues track featuring grungy blues guitar with powerful soulful vocals and a simple accompanying drum beat.

The second track is a fifteen minute alternate take of the track “Big Swifty.” This album immediately introduces the listeners to deep rhythmic complexities such as percussive syncopation as well as continuous time signature changes, and switching between “straight feel” and “swing feel.” This greatly contrasts with the gentle retrospective electric piano twinkling with clever modulations throughout.

Many of the songs that follow “Big Swifty” are more ten minute instrumental pieces with switching time signatures, cleverly blending different sounds across a wide variety of musical genres. The percussive parts in these instrumental pieces become much more prominent while the brass instruments smoothly correlate melodically with the electric guitar and groovy synthesizers and electric piano. His pieces are rhythmically complex, melodically catchy and intriguing, intellectually interesting to analyze and extremely varied.

One distinctively notable part of the album is the three minute live audio footage of Zappa & The Grand Wazoo Band. This is an invaluable archive and historically preserved piece that Zappa’s fans can cherish on this brand new posthumous album release.

One of the purposes of Waka/Wazoo is to preserve all of the incredible music that Zappa had created throughout his life, and also provides great nostalgic experience for Zappa fans from the twentieth century. Overall, Waka/Wazoo is a great album to introduce to those who have never heard Zappa’s music in order to gain an understanding of his innovative and genius creativity as well as his musical historical relevance.
