Album Review: Mount Westmore – Snoop Cube 40 $hort

Masterfully-constructed yet a bit out of place

Mount Westmore is a four-person supergroup consisting of rappers Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, E-40 and Too $hort. They are all prominent rappers from the West Coast. They originally released an earlier version of the album as an NFT but on December 9, they released the album on streaming services along with additional tracks that weren’t on the original version.

The album starts off with the track “California.” This is a heavy-hitting track with a catchy chorus and great verses from all four rappers. It serves as a great introduction to the album and sets the vibe of the project perfectly. The next song “Motto” features the same style as the first song with a chorus and verses from each of the four rappers. One thing that detracts from this song however is the chorus which feels pretty out of place on the song and doesn’t fit very well. The song then transitions to “Big Subwoofer” which is one of the best tracks on the album. The chorus on this track is amazing and the verses are great as well. The song feels very cohesive and encompasses each of the four rappers very well. The bass on the song is amazing and overall the production complements the rapping great.

“Too Big” is one of the most popular songs on the album and was released as a single for a good reason. It is one of the catchiest songs on the album and has a great beat. The song “Free Game” is another popular song from the album but it has its flaws. While the verses and beat are amazing, the chorus does not fit the song. It detracts from the rest of the track and makes it difficult to listen to all the way through. The beat however is masterfully constructed.

Later on, the song “Lace You Up” is also a track with great production. The storytelling on the song is great and the verses are all amazingly delivered. The chorus is also great. The outro track “Mash” brings a newer-sounding production to the album. It does sound good but feels a bit out of place, especially as the outro.

Overall, this album was a fun listen for fans of boom-bap rap and West Coast rap. The production on the album was great as were the verses from each of the four rappers that made up this group. The choruses were hit-or-miss but were generally catchy. While this album wasn’t enough to contend with the best rap albums of 2022 it’s still a great project and is worth listening to.
