Album Review: Lacuna Coil – Comalies XX

Burst of creativity with delightful melodies and emotion

Goth metal band Lacuna Coil has been around the music scene since 1994 and last month the band released the album Comalies XX  which is a rearranged re-recording of the band’s 2002 album Comalies. Each track is filled with a killer mix of melody and heavy metal while the vocals and instrumentation capture what kind of a band Lacuna Coil is. Comalies XX shows listeners that the band can still create impactful music.

Righteous “Heaven’s a Lie XX” is a fantastic rearrangement from the original due to how the vocal performances from Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro bring heavier emotions that are filled with sheer rage. Also, the vocal arrangement in the original version has Ferro singing harmonically whereas in the latest version Ferro’s voice is authoritative while he grumbles out the lyrics. “Heaven’s a Lie XX” features gorgeous vocals from both Scabbia and Ferro.

Beautiful “Human XX” is a great rearrangement piece because the guitar playing by Diego Cavallotti and Marco Coti Zelati is a lot stronger. While listening, both versions do have killer guitar riffs but on “Human XX” both Cavallotti and  Zelati shake the background with vein-jolting riffs whereas on the original the guitar playing harmonically blares out lighter chords.

Dazzling “Tight Rope XX” is another latest version that shows how creative the band is with their music and on this composition in particular. Zelati brings in more talent with his keyboard playing. Unlike the original, this version consists of delicate keyboard playing which brings a sense of wonderment to this ditty whereas on the original listeners will not be able to hear the keyboards due to how lightly Zelati is playing the keys. “Tight Rope XX” is simply elegant with Zelati playing his heart out on the keyboards.

Gorgeous “Entwined XX” is another stunning rearrangement that gives an insight into Scabbia singing in pure passion. Throughout the entire track, Scabbia expresses her heartfelt feelings toward another person. Some listeners will undoubtedly find themselves feeling captivated by the emotions while the instrumentation blares. The original version is a bit different from the new rendition because the band is playing on lighter musical tempos which enable listeners to hear Scabbia singing more melodically. Both versions are amazing and showcase Scabbia’s fantastic vocal abilities.

The title track “Comalies XX” is the latest version that ends things with dynamic instrumentation and vocals. As a whole, this rearrangement is bolder and loud with sharp guitar riffs, hardcore keyboard playing, thunderous drum play and fabulous vocal performances whereas the original is lighter due to how harmonically the band performs together and how low the vocal styles are. “Comalies XX” is a fun-filled ending that has wonderful instrumentation and vocals.

Comalies XX is filled with hard-hitting creativity by Lacuna Coil and just by listening, it is obvious the band had fun putting this album together.
