The legends of Bikini Kill will come to Chicago in April of 2023. They are set to play as part of a spring show series hosted by The Salt Shed, one of the city’s newest live music venues that has local concert-fanatics buzzing. While still available, purchase tickets to check out the iconic rockers of Bikini Kill perform live on Apr. 22.
Bikini Kill hails from Washington with original members Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail, Billy Karren and Kathi Wilcox. The band’s first career wave spanned from 1990 to 1997, during which they produced hits such as their 1991 self-release debut cassette Revolution Girl Style Now, 1993 studio album Pussy Whipped and 1996’s Reject All American LP. Pussy Whipped featured one of Bikini Kill’s most popular singles, a feminist punk anthem titled “Rebel Girl.”
Also known for their part in launching the feminist punk Riot Grrrl movement as the ‘90s began, Bikini Kill encouraged women to express their anger and frustration instead of suppressing it, and worked to give a voice to marginalized individuals. Riot Grrrl participants famously published zines, music and other art as well as engaged in activism as part of the movement. Fans can feel Bikini Kill’s inclusionary ferocity and creative energy vibrate through the city at their Chicago show in April.
