Album Review: The Comet is Coming – Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam

Funky space electronica full of exciting energy

London-based “apocalyptic space funk” trio The Comet is Coming just released their newest album, Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam. It is their fourth album. The album blends jazz, funk and a space-y aesthetic electronica sound into an exciting collection of music.

The first track “CODE,” is a jazzy, funky and space-y improvisational piece. A saxophone solo is played over airy synths, a dance beat, and sound effects. The mood is exciting and the instrumentation is eclectic. The second song is “TECHNICOLOUR.” This piece is considerably slower, but with a similar mood as the first. It definitely has a colorful sound, mixing a heavy, busily-textured instrumentation with a complex underlying beat.

Next up is “LUCID DREAMER.” This dreamy track is all drums, synths, keyboard effects and a beautiful saxophone solo. The mood is ethereal and relaxed. The colors of the sounds of this piece are darker and warmer than that of the first two tracks, making this piece perfect for relaxing on a Fall day.

“ANGEL OF DARKNESS” has a dark, ominous tone to it, starting off with droning sound effects and suspenseful synth chords. But the saxophone solo that enters lifts the darkness a bit with its passionate improvisational melody. The piece as a whole is more of an art piece than a “relaxing on a Fall day” sort of piece, but it still makes for great listening nonetheless.

“ATOMIC WAVE DANCE” is a fun piece that definitely sounds like the title of the track. This electronic dance song comprises a playful saxophone solo played atop drums and keyboard. The mood is very energetic, and brings the listener along for a ride from the very beginning.

To skip to the last song, there is “MYSTIK” a very sci-fi-sounding piece that combines watery space synths with jazzy drums and a saxophone solo into an eerie, intense song that gives off all sorts of vibes. The song builds towards a very cool climax towards the last section, where underlying chords are played in a hopeful progression, and the mood seems to summarize the entire album, bringing it to a grand finale.

Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam is not an album to miss. The sounds of this album are eclectic and fun to listen to, but are also thought-provoking and amazing. Although the instrumentation is similar for all of the songs, each piece is different from the rest and inspires a different energy. There is a song in this collection for multiple occasions, whether it be relaxing beside a Fall sunset, driving to work or hanging out with friends.
