Album Review: Little Dragon – Opening the Door

Light dance-pop for your Fall playlist

Little Dragon, the Swedish electronic pop quartet consisting of Yukimi Nagano, Erik Bodin, Fredrik Wallin, and Håkan Wirenstrand, just released a new EP titled Opening the Door. The album is slow-tempo, smooth, and relaxed.

The first track, “Stay,” featuring JID, is a funky yet mellow, slow, pop love song. The bass ostinato is bouncy and light, complemented by shimmering bell synths. The vocals, lyrics and rap section make this song catchy and easy to chill to. This song is perfect for any Fall life soundtrack.

The next song, “Frisco,” brings up the energy a bit more, with a four-on-the-floor dance beat, featuring some elements of soul and R&B. The instrumentation is still light, but the song is a fully danceable track all the same.

“Peace” is the third and final track on the EP. This track opens with a solo flute, soon accompanied by droning synths, then the addition of drums and vocals. The lyrics entail a speaker searching for peace, which is currently transient and fleeting.

This EP is the perfect Fall playlist addition for anyone searching for some smooth, light music to accompany their fall walking or commuting. The music incorporates an eclectic array of sounds in its sound palette and offers moving rhythms and beats that don’t have the heaviness of some electronic dance music but are still danceable.
