Chicago-born rock band the Smoking Popes is set to headline an event hosted by Riot Fest at the Bottom Lounge. The event, titled Smoking Popes: Midwest Simmerfest, takes place on Nov. 12 with supporting acts Off With Their Heads, The Color Fred and Limbeck.
In 2018, the Smoking Popes produced their most recent album Into the Agony. For the first time since they recorded cover album The Party’s Over in 1998, all four original members appear on the recent release. Members include Mike Felumlee and brothers Matt, Eli and Josh Caterer. The first track on Into the Agony, “Simmer Down,” likely influenced the upcoming event’s Simmerfest title.
The Smoking Popes emerged in 1991 and released their debut album two years later, Get Fired. One of their most popular albums, Born to Quit, featured chart-topper “Need You Around.” The single appeared on the soundtrack of ‘90s hit romcom Clueless, introducing the band to a wider, more mainstream audience. Born to Quit originally dropped in 1994, with a re-release the following year. The Smoking Popes took a break from 1999-2005, reuniting for a sold-out show at Chicago’s Metro.
