Album Review: Beach Bunny – Emotional Creature

Heartbreak, the musical inspiration

Tik Tok sensation Beach Bunny releases their second album Emotional Creature, featuring the same raw teenage angst within each track.

This Chicago-based band found their rocket to the main stage after their songs “Prom Queen” and “Cloud 9” went viral on Tik Tok.  Both tracks were a part of their debut album, Honeymoon released in 2020.  As explained by frontwoman Lili Trifilio, when discussing the album with Apple Music, each song runs through many different emotional experiences.  While the record does feel aimed at the younger Tik-Toking generation, the album definitely has a place for any listener.

The start of the album sets the emotion for the rest of the record.  “Entropy” features many different familiar elements, like the cut-dry Avril Lavigne-esque vocals reminiscing of the early 2000s teenage broken heart.  For the younger crowd that listens in on “Entropy,” it is the modern version of the high school heartache, while the older crowd tuning in may feel a bit “been there, done that.”  The track is catchy and thrashes on with a simple alt soundscape, but may feel aimed at a younger ear.

“Oxygen” is the uplifting pep talk we all wish we had as teenagers.  The track features several emotions filtering through the mind described within the verses, all coming to a comforting “fear not” feeling within the hook.  The song still features a wonderful complexity within the verses as the guitar riffs glimmer right behind the vocal melody and seems to find a brightness that comes together.

When heartbreak kicks in we all need a talking to, to break us from the chains of ache.  “Weeds” is the internal intervention that happens in everyone, pointing the finger back at oneself.  While some songs on the record do direct themselves to a younger audience, “Weeds” truly is a song for all.

Closing the record is “Love Story.” Turning the switch from the stories and emotions of hurt and heartache, “Love Story” ends the record on the note of strong, happy and loving emotions.  Just like the opening, the song features a simplistic crashing soundscape that wonderfully runs behind the same alt straight forward dry vocals that carry every emotion.

Whether a listener is reliving their teenage days or currently in their teenage days, Emotional Creature is a fun record for all to enjoy and to get lost in the feels.
