Album Review: Final Light – Final Light

Epic instrumentals and vocals

Final Light is a duo of two members of the band, Cult of Luna. Johannes Persson and James Kent and take inspiration from the death metal genre, adding their own dramatic spin on it in this collaborative project. In June of 2022, Final Light released their self-titled album, Final Light. Although Final Light only consists of six songs, its music is diverse throughout the album. Each song remains true to death metal and its instrumentals feel fresh every time.

“Nothing Will Bear Your Name” kicks off Final Light in a dramatic way. The music and lyrics are dark in tone and create a pessimistic theme throughout Final Light. This darker theme is shown in the nihilistic lyrics and death metal instrumentals which is common in many metalcore albums. Although this may sound like a bad thing to some, the music and vocals are excellent and make for an enjoyable listening experience.

The second song on Final Light, “In the Void” is similar to “Nothing Will Bear Your Name.” Both songs are based heavily on death metal and are dark in their themes. What sets “In the Void” apart is its use of drums in the song, as its drums are used more than they are in the former track.

“It Came with the Water” is another excellent song on Final Light. Serving as a midway point for the album, the instrumentals are epic with more focus on the bass than on other songs. The bass creates a feeling of darkness, with the occasional uptick that makes an almost electric sensation at times.

Final Light finishes off strongly with the thrilling masterpiece “Ruin to Decay. While other songs are slower in pace, “Ruin to Decay” is much faster with a heavier emphasis on the guitar. Although it may have a higher pace, “Ruin to Decay” sticks to the darker feeling presented in Final Light and concludes the album on a high note.

In just six songs, Final Light makes a strong debut. Final Light has epic instrumentals and vocals in their entirety which makes for something special. Although it would be nice to see more songs on the album, Final Light is a solid way to debut an album.
