Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck Announce New Collaborative Album 18, Debut First Single “This Is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr”

It is no secret that Johnny Depp has always wanted to be rockstar. Even as a Hollywood guy, he’s always dressed for the job he wanted but rarely got. He’s acted alongside his musical heroes, joined them on stage to help perform their songs and even contributed to studio recordings here and there, but he now has an established name in guitar legend Jeff Beck taking a chance with him.

According to Blabbermouth, the two met in 2016 and Beck was impressed with Depp’s broad knowledge of music and prowess as a songwriter. Amid his recently concluded defamation trial, Depp joined his friend on stage in England and the duo have now announced a collaborative album set to arrive on July 15. Check out their latest single:

In the late stages of his celebrity, Depp finally seems to be living out his fantasy. His material, however, isn’t something record executives would jump on; it’s the product of hanging out with aging musicians for decades before a small fraction of them figured he’s “good enough.” The only part of Depp that truly stands out on “This Is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr” is his signature slur that just so happens to be on key. He is fortunate to have Beck by his side, similar to Drake’s support for J Cole’s basketball “career.”

The 13-track album titled 18 has been in the works since 2019 and it includes a mix of original compositions as well as genre-fluid covers ranging from Celtic to Motown. Beck expanded on the concept behind the upcoming release: “When Johnny and I started playing together, it really ignited our youthful spirit and creativity. We would joke about how we felt 18 again, so that just became the album title too.”

Beck and Depp are currently on tour in Europe through July 25, during which time the album will drop. Check out the cover and tracklist below:
