Album Review: Pascal Hetzel – ASLM

Techno artist Pascal Hetzel releases an intense, cinematic new album

Berlin-based producer Pascal Hetzel has just released his latest album, ASLM. This electronic album is full of intense rhythm and dark motivic themes and creates a cinematic experience worth taking part in.

The full-track crescendo that is “RBBRMN,” the first track of the album, brings the listener’s attention to the album one measure at a time. A dark, grounded synth bass ostinatos consistently throughout the piece, giving it a sense of continuity and coherence. Above that are a continuous kick and ride rhythm that becomes more complex as the piece moves forward. The track captures interest one motivic addition to the next, propelling us into the rest of the album.

The next track, “TWST,” starts in a dystopian-sounding, futuristic soundscape. Still maintaining a slight hint of danceability, this piece feels more minimalistic in instrumentation, yet is full of forwarding movement and intensity all the same. The hollow, echoey sound effects bring a natural edge to the robotic-sounding themes of this piece, which create a satisfying contrast in mood.

Next on the album is the track “CHMST.” This industrial-sounding piece would make a great soundtrack for a futuristic spy movie. The interplay between low and high drums echoes throughout the entire track, moving the track forward and into each section.

“SLT” continues the narrative of the album with robotic-sounding synth motifs and helicopter-like sounds running in the background. If the theme of the album is dark intensity, then this track is the perfect epitome, and the remaining tracks follow similar suit.

Overall, this album brings intensity and style to techno narration and weaves coherent themes with simply enjoyable music.
