Album Review: Final Cry – The Ever-Rest

A raging thirtieth anniversary celebration

On March 18th, Final Cry released their 6th studio album, The Ever-Rest. This album marks the group’s 1st full-length album release since Zombique debuted in 2018.

Final Cry originated from Germany and first came together in 1989. This was a time of reunification for Germany. The Berlin Wall had fallen and Germany was whole again for the first time in decades. When the group first started up, they performed around Germany under the name Parricide. Parricide rebranded under the name Avalon in 1991 and then changed their name one final time in 1992, settling on Final Cry. Priding themselves on their fast guitars and drums, 2022 marks their thirtieth anniversary playing together under the name Final Cry.

Final Cry is currently on tour in Germany to promote The Ever-Rest. With The Ever-Rest nearing its release, Final Cry’s current roster consists of five members: Kai Wilhelm and Eiko Truckenbrodt on vocals, Holger Feldmann on drums and Sonja Sonnenburg on keyboards.

Final Cry kicks off its thirtieth anniversary with a bang, as The Ever-Rest seems to do everything right. The music is electric and fast, as shown with the raging drums and deadly riffing that aligns perfectly with the death metal genre. The Ever-Rest emphasizes speed, showing off the incredible musical talents of the band.

This showcase of speed and raging drums can be found all across The Ever-Rest, notably on title track “The Ever-Rest” and “Mallory’s Mask.” Both songs perfectly combine the use of raging drums and electric keyboards. This drum-keyboard fusion creates an intense and deadly feeling that honors the genre of death metal but also feels new.

The exceptional vocal talents of Wilhelm and Truckenbrodt shine on The Ever-Rest. The duo’s vocals fuse together nicely, fitting well within the lightning-fast instrumentals. Taking inspiration from the death metal genre, their voices help create an epic listening experience. A heavy emphasis on drums and hard riffs in combination with the darker-toned vocals create a sense of rebellion.

The Ever-Rest is an excellent celebration of Final Cry’s thirtieth anniversary. The group captures the essence of death metal, providing for an excellent listening experience. The beats have a nice, fast-paced flow, with an electric feeling that makes the album feel that much deadlier. The deep-cutting vocals complement the instrumentals with their dark tone, giving forth a rebellious vibe.
