Grimes has unveiled news of the birth of her second child with Elon Musk. The couple are now parents of a girl named Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, “Y” for short, alongside their first child, X Æ A-Xii, “X” for short.
After the birth of their first child in May 2020, Musk announced his semi-separation from Grimes, citing his demanding work with SpaceX and Tesla.
“It’s mostly that my work at SpaceX and Tesla requires me to be primarily in Texas or traveling overseas and her work is primarily in LA,” he explained.
However, in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Grimes said that through surrogate, they have had another child and that after the birth of Y, she relocated to Austin. Speaking of her newly-born child’s name, the singer said that Exa alludes to the term exaFLOPS, which refers to the ability to perform one quintillion floating-point operations per second. Meanwhile, she explained Dark as “the unknown. People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe.”
Grimes described her relationship with Musk as “fluid,” stating that they are best friends, and that they expect to have more children in the future.
“We live in separate houses,” she said. “We’re best friends. We see each other all the time…. We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it . . . We’ve always wanted at least three or four.”
