Album Review: Garbage – Beautiful Garbage 20th Anniversary Deluxe

A remastered throwback

Any ’90s kid will say that at some point, Garbage was a staple within their musical awakening. With songs like “Only Happy When it Rains,” “Stupid Girl” and “I Think I’m Paranoid,” Garbage was a staple within the ever-changing sound of the ’90s and early 2000s. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the band has released a brand new remastered version of their album Beautiful Garbage 20th Anniversary Deluxe. This new release not only houses remasters of the known songs from the past but also includes remixes, live versions, acoustic versions and so much more.

The original release of Beautiful Garbage hit radio waves back in 2001, coming in as the band’s third full-length album. The album was released a few short weeks after September 11, and due to lack of promotion and pushing of the record, it fell short and did not receive the fan reaction as expected. Though, in the end, the album had singles like “Cherry Lips” and “Androgyny” stated within the international charts drawing in fan attention leading these songs to sit at the top of the charts. This new deluxe version breathes new life to the favorites fans already know, giving a fresh new look to this album.

The hit off this record back in the day was “Cherry Lips,” but now it features a brand new facelift. A clear remastering of the track takes the listener back to the year 2001, now in musical HD. Another familiar song, “Breaking Up the Girl,” comes racing in and each element shines, making the record feel as if it is being released for the first time all over again.

Just like their 1998 remixes album, Version 2.0 (The Official Remixes), this 20th-anniversary deluxe edition houses several deliciously ’90s/early 2000s remixes of each song on the album. Featured are remixes of “Cherry Lips” by DJEJ’s GO GO TEAM, along with a few others that bring elements of techno and dance that exudes Prodigy and Chemical Brother vibes. “Breaking Up the Girl” (Brothers in Rhythm Radio Edit) brings a heavier dance beat that charges in with a heavy racing beat that feels strange as the vocals sing slowly against the heaviness.

A great window into the band’s past is the live versions featured on this record. The featured live tracks “Wild Horses” and “Shut Your Mouth.” Each song starts with the crowd cheering them on, and with the band being as great as they are, even the live tracks feel and sound as if they are studio recorded.

Along with the crazy techno remixes and live tracks, the band has also included rough mixes and acoustic versions of songs. “Nobody Loves You” (Rough Mix) takes it back to feeling like the original release with the gritty sound and unrefined tone that’s been cleaned up with the remasterings. “Breaking Up the Girl” (Acoustic remaster) brings this smashing song to its bare bones showing a totally different side to Garbage.

Garbage brings a fresh face to their music with a remastering of their popular record Beautiful Garbage with the addition of some new musical treats.
