The Work brings powerhouse tunes
Pennsylvanian band Rivers of Nihil knows how to create havoc with their music, having released two EPs and four records. Just last month, Rivers of Nihil released their album The Work, and each track has the elements of skull-crushing technical death metal. The vocals by Jake Dieffenbach remain dominant while singing the lyrics, the guitar playing by Brody Uttley, Jon Topore and Adam Biggs fills the atmosphere with hard-hitting riffs. The drum playing from Jared Klein shakes the background with heavy drum beats.
The thunderous track “Dreaming Black Clockwork” has vein-shaking guitar playing. Right off the bat, Biggs’s bass guitar rings with rumbling heavy riffs. Though, it isn’t long before Uttley and Topore show up with blazing riffs that contribute to the insanity. “
The mysterious “Focus” is a fun composition that highlights how talented Uttley is as a musician. Outside of the guitar, Uttley uses keyboards and programming to create heart-stopping keys that contribute to the musical madness. While listening, light notes play out, blending in with the rest of the instrumentation, and the sound gives an insight into what technical death metal sounds like. “Focus” is a hard-driven piece that has great keyboard and programming playing from Uttley.
“MORE?” is incredible due to the drumming from Klein. Throughout the entire track, Klein does a good job of staying attuned with the rest of the band by creating drum beats that cause listeners to headbang while feeling the music. “MORE?” is a crazy mind dazzler that shows how talented Kelin is as a drummer.
An all mighty track, “Episode” has an incredible vocal performance from Dieffenbach and the best part is how his vocals bring a strong dose of energy and authority while he shouts out the words. Also, the emotions of anger and hatred can be felt while Dieffenbach’s continues to shout out in rage. Dieffenbach’s vocal style shows how serious the theme is.
“Maybe One Day” is a harmonic track that some people will be able to relate to. The lyrics “Hey, I think it’s better if I go/ There’s only so much that we can grow/ You said it’s all in my mind/ But I think we’ve lost it this time” suggest it is time to say goodbye to the things that are stopping one from moving forward in life. Possibly even letting go of a person one thought would bring happiness into our lives. “Maybe One Day” is beautiful, and people may find themselves within the lyrics.
Rivers of Nihil made a big splash with The Work by how the instrumentation and vocals show how amazing death metal can be while using creativity to craft powerhouse tunes.
