EP dazzles the mind with non-stop madness
The metal band Mayhem is one of the founders of the Norwegian black metal scene, and their music has heavily influenced the music genre with their skull-crushing sound. Earlier this month, Mayhem released Atavistic Black Disorder/Kommando EP, packed with blazing guitar playing from Teloch, Ghul and Necrobutcher. The drum playing from Hellhammer contributes to the insanity with thunderous beats, and the vocals by Attila Csihar are powerful and authoritative. Atavistic Black Disorder/Kommando EP is a solid piece of work showcasing Mayhem’s ability to shake people’s souls with their music.
The opening song, “Voces Ab Altam,” kicks things off with a sheer bang of hard-hitting metal music. The righteous instrumentation and vocals give an insight into what black metal music is and how it should sound. Altogether, the guitar and drum performance blasts the background with full-blown craziness, and the vocals give this a punch of power. The first track on any album is important because it gives listeners a chance to hear what the band has in store for them, and on “Voces Ab Alta,” Mayhem is not being shy about letting people know who they are as a band.
The screaming track “Black Glass Communion” gives an insight into how strong Csihar’s vocals are. While listening, high-strung emotion can be felt through Csihar’s endless screaming and shouting. Also, halfway through the tune, Csihar changes his vocal style to a darker tone by simply talking out the lyrics. “Black Glass Communion” is crazy good due to Csihar’s dominant vocal performance.
“In Defense Of Our Future” is a head-banging cover from punk-metal band Discharge, and what is enjoyable about this version is how Mayhem kept the punk music element alive with surging guitar playing from Teloch, Ghul and Necrobutcher. In the original version, the guitar playing is rhythmic with sturdy riffs, whereas, in Mayhem’s cover, the guitar notes give the atmosphere a strong kick of heart-shaking noise. Mayhem did a great job “In Defense Of Our Future,” and fans will enjoy hearing a track that has sharp guitar playing.
The ever-electrifying track “Commando” is a short but sweet song by punk band The Ramones. Once again, Mayhem took it upon themselves to create their version of this piece, and they did a great job with it. The drum playing by Hellhammer gives this piece a mix of punk and rock, whereas, on the original cover, the drum playing was solely focused on the style of rock and punk music. “Commando” always has been a classic composition, and Hellhammer’s talents shine as he clashes the elements of punk and metal music together.
Atavistic Black Disorder/Kommando EP is a monster, and Mayhem knows how to keep creating smashing black metal music.
