1990s folk icons Ani DiFranco and the Indigo Girls to perform at SummerStage on 9/21

The Indigo Girls and Ani DiFranco will be performing at SummerStage on Tuesday, September 21st. The show will take place at the Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. Doors open at 6:00pm, with the show scheduled to run from 7:00pm-10:00pm. Tickets range from $59.50-$79.50.

The Indigo Girls are a folk duo that have been releasing music since the late 1980s. Members Amy Ray and Emily Saliers met in elementary school and began performing together in high school. Their success was a result of the popularity of folk-rock in the 1990s, and came in the wake of other female folk singer-songwriters such as Tracy Chapman and Mary Ramsey.

DiFranco began her career in 1989, releasing her debut self- titled album on her own record label, Righteous Babe Records, when she was just 19. Her music is usually classified as folk, but DiFranco claims influence from punk and rap music, saying that “It’s an attitude, it’s an awareness of one’s heritage, and it’s a community. It’s subcorporate music that gives voice to different communities and their struggle against authority”.

The SummerStage performance is part of a 2021 tour for both Ani DiFranc and the Indigo Girls. DiFranco released her most recent album, Revolutionary Love, in January 2021. The Indigo Girls are touring to support their 2020 album Look Long, which was released in May of last year.

If you have nostalgic memories of 1990s folk-rock, this is sure to be a fun show.
