mxdwn PREMIERE: Kate Clover Shares New Desert Noir Video for Fuzzed-Out Rocker “Tearjerker” Directed by Orange Is The New Black’s Rebecca Knox

Kate Clover is a Southern California-based singer-songwriter who’s sound fits right in line with the steady stream of garage-rock influenced rock acts from the area. Today we’re premiering the video for her great new single “Tearjerker,” which finds her rubbing elbows with some high-profile artists from the world of music and TV. The song was co-written by Clover and her boyfriend Brandon Welchez, while the video was produced by Orange Is The New Black’s Rebecca Knox.

“We wanted to make a desert noir-style video inspired by Hitchcock and Straight to Hell,” said Clover. “Our goal was to challenge typical casting stereotypes and tell a simple revenge story. It was interesting to cast females in predominantly male roles because it ultimately didn’t affect the outcome at all in terms of telling the story. What I learned from that was that If the actor had the essence of the character that was all that mattered and our friends nailed it. The bonus for me was I got to create my dream girl gang in the process. It was so much fun and happened so fast that it almost felt like a dream! ”

The song is based around fuzzed-out guitars that open with a frenetic start-stop riff, Clover’s vocals straddling the line between retro doo-wop and slightly more modern garage punk. The video follows Clover’s character and her exploits in the desert, where she betrays her partner along with the help of her girl gang. The action is certainly inspired by Hitchcock and the filmmakeing has elements of Tarantino’s intentional campiness. The betrayal depicted in the video is a direct reference to the themes of “Tearjerker.”

“[‘Tearjerker’] about being close to someone who hurts you,” said Clvoer. “It’s about betrayal and revenge. Love can be both beautiful and destructive.”

Clover’s EP Channel Zero was released on May 14 through SongVest Records, which was also produced by Welchez. The four-song release includes previously-released singles like “Love You To Death.” After spending years in more desert-rock styled groups, Glover has gone solo with a more vintage garage sound and played with like-minded artists such as Death Valley Girls and King Dude.
