Australian singer and songwriter Sia has “won” the worst director Razzie for her film Music. The movie has been mired in controversies ever since the first trailer, from the casting of a neuronormative actress as the autistic title character Music and being accused of ableism to collaborating with a dubious group who uses “autism as disease” rhetoric. Many have criticized a specific scene where one character lays on top of Music during a meltdown to restrain her.
Clem Bastow, an actual autistic individual writes, “In reality, the use of prone or supine restraint has killed dozens of children – often ones on the Autism spectrum – and injured many more in US schools, juvenile justice settings, and psychiatric facilities. Just last year, autistic boy Eric Parsa died when sheriff’s deputies allegedly placed him in a prone restraint, taking turns sitting on him, for nine minutes. Eric’s ‘crime’: experiencing a meltdown in public.”
Suffice to say, many have found the movie to be offensive, harmful, and done in poor taste. Others simply think that it’s just a bad movie. So bad that main stars Kate Hudson and Maddie Ziegler were also nominated for their work in the film and both have “won” in their categories as well.
