HILOTRONS, aka Mike Dubue has been releasing music since 2001 and now is in the midst of releasing a trilogy of albums called Lonely Cinema. The first of the albums, Lonely Cinema, was released at the end of 2020 and the second installment Suicide Kingdom, in February of 2021. The third installment is an EP called Lonely Cinema II and it features the “theme song” for the three-volume project, “Theme From Lonely Cinema,” and the video for this track is premiering here today.
“The story of the Lonely Cinema trilogy is about disconnection from reality while watching the world through a screen,” said Dubue.
Sonically “Theme From Lonely Cinema” lives up to its name, conuring imagery of a bizarro cinema or even a haunted carnival. The music has a definite otherwordly quality to it, like something out of a David Lynch film that was never made.
“I think of this theme song as the ‘ultimate spy-conspiracy soundtrack’ to a movie that doesn’t exist,” said Dubue. “It captures the feeling of anxiety and displacement that can come from feeling outside of society. This music is very visual for me and takes inspiration from my love of films from the ’60s, ’70s and 80s, including horror, science fiction and Westerns.”
The video (which features a strobe-like quality, so warning to anyone with photosensitivity or seizure disorders) features colors flashing around the streaming in psychedelic patterns, swirling in on itself around the screen.
“I have an analog approach to recording,” said Dubue. “With this particular song, I set the sound stage by using the ceiling mics of my 168 year old church, which is home to Studio Cimetière in Quyon, Québec.”
As Dubue mentions, he lives in a small town in Québec where he runs and operates a recording studio, artist residency and 34mm outdoor cinema out of a 168 year old church. Since 2001, he’s released seven LPs and 3 EPs,
