Album will rattle the mind in its cage
Norwegian death metal band Cadaver have been performing music since the ’90s, and they’re back with 2020’s Edder & Bile. Anders Odden’s vocals fills each track with raspy growls and shrieks that contribute to the endless madness, and the drum playing from Dirk Verbeuren is quick and erratic. Edder & Bile is an album that shows what death metal is, and Cadaver do a good job of showing who they are through their killer vocals and instrumentation.
Crazy “Circle Of Morbidity” is absolutely insane because the chemistry between Odden and the lead singer of Possessed, featured artist Jeff Becerra, is undeniably amazing, as both vocalists pour their hearts out while performing. Right off the bat, Odden’s vocals welcome people to his world through his raspiness, and the absolute best part of the tune is when Becerra makes his appearance, with his high-pitched shouting providing a welcome contrast. Featuring Becerra on this composition was a smart move. His contribution gives this piece a swift kick of incredible high pitched vocals. “Circle Of Morbidity” is a cohesive, collaborative tune that oozes well-performed vocals by Odden and Becerra.
Head banger “Deathmachine ” has amazing drum playing from Verbeuren, and right at the beginning of this tune, the deep and fast sound of Verbeuren smacking his drum head can be heard emerging with great authority. Especially pleasing to hear is how the musical tempo Verbeuren plays on is consistent, but it slowly quickens to more of an up-tempo beat in the middle of the tune. Drums are a big part of the reason why metal music is such a dynamic genre, and “Deathmachiene” is a great example of what classic death metal should sound like. There is no doubt that Verbeuren plays his heart out on this song.
Roaring “The Pestilence” has incredible vocals by Odden. On this entire composition, Odden’s voice remains strong and durable while he chants out the lyrics with his sharp vocals. Also enjoyable is how Odden’s vocal style stays on a lower range while he uses his raspy vocals to shout out the words of the tune, and in some ways, Odden’s shouting keeps the whole track together because it brings a strong sense of anger. “The Pestilence” is a well sung piece, as Odden’s voice remains authoritative while he continues to create havoc.
Blazing “Years Of Nothing” has great guitar playing from Odden. The riffs from the bass guitar blare with deep, thunderous sounds that can shake the veins of listeners, and the guitar solo toward the middle of the song is absolutely wild, creating a surge of energy that can blow listeners’ minds with strong and steady riffs. When he isn’t showing off his vocals, Odden is a talented guitarist who is not afraid to show people who he is as a musician, and “Years Of Nothing” really shows what kind of a guitar player Odden is.
Hardcore “Let Me Burn” is a fantastic song by how the noise from the vocals and instrumentation blend together to create a knockout punch of hardcore metal. Odden’s guitar playing steals the show with mind blowing guitar riffs that’ll surely cause people to air guitar like crazy while listening. His bass guitar playing fills the background with thunderous riffs and his vocals are righteous and grungy. “Let Me Burn” is a piece that is filled with incredible vocals and instrumentation by two musicians who clearly love to play hardcore metal music.
Cadaver have done a fantastic job with Edder & Bile, and both musicians worked hard to craft an album that is capable of blowing people’s minds with its deep instrumentation and satisfying vocals.
