While the name Veinmelter might sound like a pretty apt moniker for a metal band, Winston Harrison’s musical project of that name is much the opposite. The Nashville multi-instrumentalist creates lush, evocative soundscapes on his new EP Still In the Air, which is out on November 20. Today we’re premiering the video for the EP’s first single “All The Waves,” a slow-burning ballad with trippy, undulating visuals inspired by LED artist Jim Campbell.
Describing Veinmelter’s style on “All The Waves” as a soundscape doesn’t do the track justice, as it’s certainly just as much a pop song as it’s an experimental or ambient song. While it’s not exactly a verse/chorus/verse style straight-ahead pop song, there is some traditional structure to the single. And while the chorus isn’t a sugar-sweet earworm, it has a gorgeously sweeping quality with Harrison’s falsetto vocals leading the way. Think of something along the lines of Bon Iver’s more recent work.
The video was directed by Chad McClarnon and features everyday images like a girl blowing bubbles, lovers embracing each other and a woman running in a field of flowers. The result is a hypnotic video that’s well-complemented by the soothing sounds of Veinmelter.
“I love his work of pixelating images and creating hypnotic moving pieces out of normal images,” said Harrison. “Chad took this idea into a more psychedelic realm with the distortion of images and saturation of colors. In the best and worst moments, we cannot recognize what is right in front of us. Even in the difficult times, our own distortions can be really beautiful, if we are able to see them.”
