The Weeknd @ United Center (6/21)

Toronto’s R&B legend The Weeknd is gracing Chicago next Summer! The Weeknd’s sensitive, falsetto voice accompanied by dark poetry about the darkness and existential experience that partying, love, and drugs brings; all coming together to make Canada, The United States, and the world fall in love with him. The Weeknd has won a mountain of awards, 3 Grammy’s, Two American Music Awards, nine Billboard and Juno awards, and even a nomination for an academy award. What started as an anonymous project, releasing his identity in secret, even his first tracks were grabbing artists like Drake’s attention, as well as America. The Weeknd became one of the most recognizable artists in the R&B genre in the past decade, having a golden voice that was meant for the stage from the very beginning.

The Weeknd began releasing tracks to YouTube while keeping his identity a secret, building intrigue about who could possibly be behind the voice. He released 3 tracks, What You Need, Loft Music, and The Morning in 2010. In 2011, The Weeknd compiled tracks into his self released mixtape House of Balloons. After beginning to tour in Toronto, Drake reached out to him after one of his shows to talk about collaboration, The Weeknd joined him on tour and contributed to four Drake songs. After compiling previous mixtapes into Trilogy in 2012, The Weeknd released his debut album Kiss Land in 2013, topping at number 2 on Billboards 200. His next album Beauty Behind the Madness shook North America, featuring hit tracks like The Hills, Earned It, and Can’t Feel My Face. In 2016 he released his next album Starboy which includes features from Lana Del Rey, Daft Punk, Kendrick Lamar, and Future.

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
