Demi Lovato’s song “Commander in Chief” brought light to her political beliefs just in time for the presidential election. Lovato, who is widely known for her powerful vocals, easily makes her feelings towards the upcoming election clear through her choice of lyrics in the song.
The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump political committee, released their version of music video for “Commander in Chief” just yesterday. The committee was formed in 2019 by several Republicans, past and present. They were created to show why Donald Trump should not be re-elected into office this year. The video focuses on and emphasizes what things have become under Trump’s presidency. It shows clips of a world that is suffering. Empty classrooms, sick people in a hospital, families distancing from one another and memorials of those who have tragically lost their lives this year. The video mirrors the song’s escalation to show that the country is coming together to help one another by participating in protests, supporting one another and voting for the upcoming election. While Lovato’s lyrics are straight forward on how she feels things have gone under Trump’s presidency, the video helps visualize the damage he has caused to the country.
Lovato took to social media to express how she would feel if this song were to affect her career. She emphasized the fact that while she knows that this song might be controversial to some, she still has the right to have a political view as well as other citizens. Lovato mentioned that she isn’t worried if this will ruin her career because she is standing for something that she believes in.
The political committee shared a donation page in hopes that their program can “end the suffering, end the corruption, and end the presidency of the worst ‘Commander in Chief’ in our country’s history,” according to Billboard.
