Tame Impala @ United Center (10/7)

Through his musical project Tame Impala, Kevin Parker has proven himself as one of the most idiosyncratic musicians of the past decade. Tame Impala is a household name on musical streaming services, phones, radios, and stages across the globe. Kevin Parker has collaborated with some of music’s biggest names, such as Travis Scott, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Kali Uchis, and more. Kevin Parker does it all, writes, sings, produces, plays, every note you hear from Tame Impala is finely tuned and poured over by Parker, seeking perfection up until the moment it is released. Tame Impala’s psychedelic synth-style takes a page from pop music, in that it’s made to make you feel. The obscurest of feelings produced from Tame Impala don’t quite have the words to describe them, and that is perhaps the whole point.

Kevin Parker started creating as Tame Impala in 2007 after developing home-produced tracks and releasing them on MySpace, to the intrigue of record labels. After the release of his self-titled EP in 2008, Tame Impala was climbing the charts in Perth Australia and showcased heavily on Triple-J. Tame Impala released his debut album Innerspeaker in 2010, what followed was several nominations and critical acclaim. His next album, Lonerism released in 2012 expanded Tame Impala’s vision with more sentimental lyrics. In a common theme with Tame Impala’s music, Lonerism earned even more nominations and awards than previously, and the trend continued with the remarkable and critically acclaimed Currents released in 2015. Currents finds its way in a myriad of people’s playlists to this day, adding an element of dance-pop to psychedelic synth. Tame Impala’s latest release is The Slow Rush released at the beginning of this year.

Tame Impala’s musical dominance has been impossible to ignore in the past decade. Be sure to hear The Slow Rush performed live next year!

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
