The Format @ Lincoln Hall (7/23)

Back together after a 12-year hiatus, The Format is going back on tour next year. Formed in 2002 by duo Sam Means and Nate Ruess of Fun, the band announced their reunion earlier this year in the Spring. Means and Ruess were childhood friends, sharing their passion for making music, they began to gain popularity on Phoenix Radios, and soon enough all around the US. Nate Ruess’s idiosyncratic voice is supplemented by Means’s talent on multiple instruments. The duo writes songs together with a catchy flare, and quirky hooks. Their style consists of an indie interpretation of 60s and 70s pop, but their complex productions tend to expand their genre into multiple locations.

The Format first appeared on Phoenix radio with their first single, The First Single, catching the attention of record labels; The First Single belonging to their debut EP (titled EP). In 2003 they laid down their debut studio album Interventions + Lullabies growing their fan base even more. In the period Elektra Records began to merge with Atlantic records, they released their next EP Snails. The Format wanted to implement a 70s influence in their next work, which in turn caused creative differences between Atlantic and the band, so they left Atlantic records and self-released their 2006 album Dog Problems, what followed was a success and high critical praise. Soon after the band took a hiatus, but are now back on track to play their classics on their reunion tour!

Joyful, sincere, and lively, you won’t want to miss Nate Ruess and Sam Means’s reformed partnership.

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
