The Garden @ The Bottom Lounge (5/12)

The epitome of unconventional, you couldn’t reign in the unabashed creativity of the twin duo band The Garden if you tried. Formed by twins Fletcher and Wyatt Shear in Orange County, California, The Garden has a youthful energy of constant experimentation without restriction, defined by their philosophy they term “Vada Vada”. Wyatt opts for bass over a guitar, giving The Garden a sound of deep powerful wattage, paired with Fletcher’s drums and supported by synth of many flavors. The Garden takes its name from the idea that their music its constantly growing, their sound has a wide range over their productions, choosing different speeds and intensities, and sometimes combining those binaries into one piece.

The Garden started in 2011 and released their self titled EP in 2012 soon followed by their next EP Everything Is Perfect later that year. In 2013 they released their debut album The Life and Times of a Paperclip. In 2015 they produced their next album Haha and in 2016 they released several singles, Play Your Cards Right, Call This # Now, and California Here We Go. In 2019 they collaborated with Mac Demarco to create the single Thy Mission. Their latest album released this year is Kiss My Super Bowl Ring which has songs co-produced by 100 Gec’s Dylan Brady. Both twins also have their own side projects with extensive releases, Fletcher’s being Puzzle and Wyatt’s being Enjoy.

The Garden’s disregard for conventional musical production is refreshing in its passion for freedom over commerciality, it’s unusual nature will have you coming back again and again. Make sure to see them live next year!

MacGregor Salmon: Transfer student from Texas A&M to Loyola University Chicago, I am a Film and Digital Media major. Though my primary study is in film, I love all things creative and want to immerse myself in all kinds of mediums. Sharing and discovering music with others has always been an important part of my relationships with others. I grew up on funk, and the first song I can remember hearing is Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. I still have much love for funk, but I also lean towards alternative, jazz, and anything experimental as I love to hear how new artists are changing the music scene. I find myself on Soundcloud often, looking for creative new works by independent artists. I also consider myself to be a writer, I love to write creative short stories, but I also want to use my skills as a writer to further my appreciation and understanding of music, and the artists behind their work.
